Street Photography as I see it...

I probably should not even call what I have in this gallery Street Photography. These images are simply things, scenes, that I have seen, framed them up the way I found the scene to be the most interesting, and snapped the image. I suppose that may be a definition of Street Photography, but I don't feel I can call myself a true Street Photographer since I engage in this art-form so infrequently. Some of the qualities of street photography that I do assign to myself occasionally - perhaps I should call them limitations... no, that doesn't sound right either... Themes, that is the term.

Some themes I assign to myself are ones like:

  • Shooting shadows only
  • Using only f/1.2 or f/22
  • organics and man-made in one shot
  • contrasting colors
  • human behavior
  • reflections
  • using a macro lens only
  • repeating imagery or patterns
  • The good or bad leave-behinds of humanity
  • textures
  • contrasts
  • rule-of-thirds shot to hell
  • etc., etc., etc.

At the end of the day, there are no rules for street photography, other than knowing your camera and how to capture subjects that interest you in the way that you see them. I suppose another rule that is useful is how to compose a shot, but once you know how to do that it is probably time to break those rules and create your own signature art. I do believe that you have to know the rules in order to break them effectively. Nuff said...
